Satanus, dark lord of a hell dimension, had been deposed from his throne by his sister, Blaze.
Satanus first came to Superman's attention when his sister engaged him in a battle over control of the Man of Steel's soul. During their battle, Satanus transported the Newstime Building and its occupants--including Superman and many of his close friends--into his own dimension. To end the Blaze/Satanus War, Superman had to agree to give Satanus control of another human's soul--Sam Foswell, who had been Perry White's stand-in at the Daily Planet for a brief time. With that small victory over his sister, Satanus returned to his exile, safely hidden away in a human host nobody would ever have suspected...
