General Zod was the name of a leader in the Kryptonian army who had rebelled against the ruling science council and tried to set himself up as supreme ruler of the planet. Along with his underlings, Quex-Ul and Zaora, Zod was captured, tried, and sentenced to lifelong imprisonment in the Phantom Zone, an extra-dimensional prison designed to hold the worst criminal offenders on Krypton. After the destruction of Krypton, Zod and his co-conspirators managed to escape the Phantom Zone by duping a young Earth scientist into releasing them. Once free, they began a campaign of destruction and subjugation which led to the near-total destruction of the Earth.
Pulled across a dimensional barrier by a young woman calling herself Supergirl, Superman faced off against these three
criminals in the so-called Pocket Universe. After a fierce battle in which Zod and his allies killed the last humans alive
on that Earth, Superman was forced to execute them using green kryptonite.
