I am so obsessed with Superman Silverage! I love Jimmy Olsen, who needs their own Superman? I feel very deprived that Lucy Lane does not not have her own webpage (at least that I can find) so I plan to construct one as soon as I get a scanner. Curt Swan Rules! I hate Neil Adams, he is evil! Yuk, he killed Superman with his freakin artwork! I have a Superman kite above my bed and hundreds of comics. I have as much Silverage stuff as I could afford. Batman is nifty also. Detective Comics Rules!!!!!

This page is great !!! When I was a kid, Superman was one of my favorite heroes. The other group of heroes "flew" by way of a certain well-known starship, circa 1966-69. :-} But I was always a Superman fan, although I thought that comic books weren't "hip" after the age of 14 or 15. (Although I made an exception & bought the DC Comic where Superman dies battling Doomsday. I knew in my gut that he'd come back. Also bought "The Death & Life of Superman") Thanks for bringing back a lot of memories !!

Hi, Mark and the gang,It's me again. I'm still feeling ashamed of myself for that unwarranted outburst with the Trekkie. However, besides that, I couldn't stay away from the site and not contribute some conclusions as to why our Supes is optimistic and inspiring, compared to this decade's model.
Here goes, after going through my available copies or reprint of the Silver and Bronze age Supes, I believe that the reasons why he is not as depressing as the present one are due to a number of factors:
1) PHYSICAL - There has been a genetic and biochemical link to worry and depression, and Kal is immune to these as his own genetic background is a buffer against neurotic urges. Coming from the esteemed House of El, all achievers and scientists, his own chromosomes prevent him from falling victim to pessimism.
In his 'super-state', he is not only invulnerable to harm but to extreme mood swings. He may be surpised, baffled,and shocked sometimes, but he recovers quickly, reacts promptly and correctly to adverse situations.
The yellow rays of our sun also boost his brainpower and keep his moods stable. His disposition is really a 'sunny' one. In fact, some depressive patients are advised to expose themselves to sunlight for at least 30 minutes, or stay under a full spectrum light to relieve low moods. And it works. The doctors must be reading Superman comics!
Even without the yellow solar rays, Kal has shown that he can keep himself occupied by delving into science, language, and writing. He always seeks an answer to problems (his own and others' as well) His own family history is rich in creativity and invention, and with his alien roots firmly imbedded in Krypton and Kandorian influences, his mind has better things to do.
2) MENTAL ATTITUDES and MORAL CODE - Kal's mindset is a 'can-do' attitude. It consists of sheer persistence, of doggedly achieving his goals but his actions are always tempered with mercy, good judgement, a strong religious and moral foundation laid by his foster-parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. Being gifted with extraordinary powers far beyond those of any mortal men has helped him to be immune to physical and mental pain which will cripple most men in a crisis. Because he rarely gets excited in the Earthly context, he can cope with any emergency immediately and think more efficiently and quickly in 'pressure situations'. His super-brain and quick reflexes allow him to solve problems. He is Mr. Fix-it in disguise.
Because of the moral code his foster parents lovingly taught him, he has learned self-control, and Kal even contrived to show himself to the public as a babbling neurotic, as a kind of safety valve for expressing the natural shocks that flesh is heir to, but of course, it's all an act, and the readers know it. It is to our amusement that his own colleagues, Lois, Perry, Jimmy do not know who Kent really is, it's all part of the game.
On the other hand, Kal needs his civilian identity to stay in the public incognito, and it also keeps him humble.
3) EMOTIONAL SELF-CONTROL - I have made an issue of today's 'heroes' who ruminate on themselves obsessively and do nothing inspiring for their adoring public.
Kal has excellent self-control. With his powers, he could have taken advantage of women, indulged in a life of crime, become a tyrant, or even just bum around, doing nothing and let the whole world go to hell. He chose the harder way, as Robert Frost said, 'I chose the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.' It is much harder to resist temptation to dominate lesser beings to lord it over everybody else and abuse your powers, especially if you are one of the mightiest men in the universe. It is a greater challenge to do good. St. Paul said,'Let us not weary in doing good.' Lois Lane, in these pc times will call Supes a wimp for not taking advantage of her. Calling Monica Lewinsky!!!!!!!!!
4) EMPATHY and SELFLESSNESS - Do you know who are the least mentally disturbed people? These people are the ones who strive for the good of mankind. Who are they? Mother Teresa, George Washington Carver, Martin Luther King, Alfred the Great (England's first and greatest king), Albert Schweitzer, Richard Wurmbrand (tortured for Christ), Blaise Pascal, Florence Nightingale. These men and women and more unsung heroes are ceaselessly toiling to improve the lot of their fellowman, and they seldom indulged in self-pity, they helped all the souls that came their way. They were too busy bearing one another's burdens to notice theirs. What we need is no psychotherapy, but more philantrophy and civic mindedness. Of this stuff is Superman made.
5) HUMILITY and EMPATHY - Supes had these qualities, yes. In his Kent persona, he even had too much of it, to the point of hypochondria and neurosis, but it's all an act. As Superman, he knew that despite his phenomeanl powers, people still die, (his foster parents did) and evil men continue to commit crimes. That's why it IS a never ending battle. His supersenses are more keenly developed than Marvel's Daredevil, and he can easily sense other people's moods by tuning in to their heartbeat, smelling their sweat, observing their body language. That makes him a very good observer of human behavior.
6) SOLITUDE- There are moments when a man must be alone with himself (ladies, take note) to keep stock of the days' actions and events. Kal needs some solitude and in the Arctic North, he finds a place to unwind, catch up on his hobbies, surf the net, get messages or distress signals from other planets, visit Kandor and just confide in his cousin, Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. Such activities help you to relax and recharge your batteries to prevent boredom and to create your own space. Anyone who can cope with solitude is made of sterner stuff. Yet our action ace does not stay isolated so long. When the outside world needs his help, he flies hastily to the scene.
Knowing our human frailties and weaknesses, with all these qualities, I therefore submit that such a character will have less mood swings, will act as an inspiration, and acts as a guardian angel to catch us when we fall.
SO WHO SAYS GOOD IS BORING? THERE IS STILL A RIGHT AND A WRONG, THERE ARE MORAL ABSOLUTES AND LAWS, JUST AS THERE ARE PHYSICAL ABSOLUTES AND LAWS.
I rest my case. UP... UP... and AWAY!!!!

Being 43 I grew up with Superman from the early 60's and was with him until destroyed by John Byrne. Haven't been back since. It's too painful seeing the mess they have made of him but I guess kids of today think that it is the original and have no idea of his glorious past. I've passed this way before a number of times and I must say this is the most extensive and thoughtful web-site devoted to our hero. It pains me to see what today's kids are believing is Superman. 1986 was a bad year. The Man of Steel who had left an indelible imprint on our culture was abandoned by those who held his copyright. Of course, Victoria Galvez is right when she said that Superman is bigger than DC (re: message archives). He is bigger than all of us. He is bigger than reality - as are all myths, for they instruct us. They hold truths that aim us toward a higher reality. Greatness is not sitting in front of you waiting for you to grasp it. It stands majestically at the back of your mind, arms and legs akimbo, red cape billowing in the wind, calling to you to take to the sky.Thanks for being here, Superman Through The Ages!

Hi Super Folks !!: I'm from Uruguay, a small country in South America (located between Argentina and Brazil). My English is very primitive, but I think you should understand me very well!I've been a Superman fan since I was 7 or 8 (now I'm 22), but it was always difficult to buy good editions in that time. I've followed (and enjoyed, of course) the Post-Crisis era, because It was easy to find spanish editions. I'm not following the story now (I don't like the blue close at all!) Maybe in a few years I'll change my mind about that.
I love the first two films too. Christopher Reeve is perfect with the big "S". The third and fourth were a little silly for me. I'd like to exchange opinions and information on the Man of Steel with anyone who wants to.
I have to go now. The site is very cool and i like it very much.

I really enjoy this site. I visit it often and even use the comic book covers and other artworks as wallpaper on my computer at my workplace, which gets many comments from my coworkers.By the way, someone tell Tony that his spelling is correct; but didjall know that when he first appeared in 1944 his name was spelled M-X-Y-Z-T-P-L-K? I have been a fan of superman for 25 years. The character has really grown since then. I was disappointed when dc comics turned him into "electric superman" with the cheesy blue costume! I'm glad they came to their senses and put him back to normal! On the live-action front, i'd have to say that chris reeve's portrayal was the most honest and wholesome. But i've got to give dean cain a lot of credit for lasting 4 seasons and doing an excellent job of playing the dual roles of clark&supes! I'm glad they nixed nick cage! He's a good actor, don't get me wrong, but did the suits at time/warner ever consider dean cain for the job? It's not like he was busy doing anything else!

Superman to me is a hero. but oh, so much more! He is two people in one. One is the protector of the world. the other is just an ordinary guy who has fears. He gets nervous, and unsure. He makes mistakes. He loves and he hates. In short, Clark Kent and Kal-el define the human race, alien though they be. What does Superman mean to me? Humanity. Strange isn't it? That an (albeit human looking) alien should embody the finest qualities of the human condition. Superman has become modern myth, transcending the "junk" stigma of comics to become a universally respected symbol. In a world where morality is an undefinable gray blob, its nice to be able to open a copy of Superman Adventures (the only series doing the character justice these days) and see things in a clearer black and white.It's been said that Marvel comics are superior because they're based in real cities like New York, giving their world more realism. Forget realism! Who wouldn't love to live in Metropolis? To live in a city free of fear? To be able to be the person who shouts "Look! Up in the Sky!"

Who is Superman? A visitor from another planet? A god? A man. He is just a man. Struggling to do what is good and right. He doesn't look upon his abilities as "powers". But he sees them as just that, abilities. A gift. And whenever possible he uses his gift to not only help people, but to benefit all of mankind. His physical state may be invulnerable, but his emotional being is just as fragile as all of us. And that is what makes him a man. Jor-El was right, we do have the potential to be a great people. Clark is just trying to set an example, and show us the way. And that is what makes him a superman. It's too bad he is just a fictional character. .....But he's not just that. He is an idea. An idea that has been around since the dawn of humanity. He lives in all of us, everyday. Reminding us that we have to take each day as it comes, and try to do what is good. what is right. what is just. And to always TRY to make the right decisions. Then we too are not only human. But all of us are Supermen as well.

The revamped Superman of 1986 is the best. All the newer stories just totally rock. No dissin' the older Superman titles but I wasn't in to all the silly stories that mostly existed throughout certian periods in Superman's time. I did enjoy the Superman Annual from 1985 that featured Mongul having Superman's body taken over by a plant that gave him a fantasy of his heart's desire. That among many of the other classics was featured in "The Greatest Superman Stories Ever Told". Now it's been about 11 or 12 years since that book came out why isn't there a volume 2 of "The Greatest Superman Stories Ever Told"? I mean there have been TPs that have dealt with most of the major storylines but there have been some stories neglected that should make it. Well, anyway this site really kicks well you know that word but I can't say it due to still wanting to be polite, LOL!

hey... i was just sufing the web for some illustrations on superman and other comic book characters and i happened to stumble upon this page. This is a neat idea to have a section for superman lovers. Well, superman has always been my favorite hero so anytime I feel week, i always remind myself that I am him.

Keep up the fantastic work!I have been involved with raising money for the Christopher Reeve Foundation, getting Chris Reeve his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 15, 1997, working with DC Comics (Superman: The Complete History, the upcoming Superman visual dictionary, etc.) and helping organize the annual Superman celebration in Metropolis, Illinois. I'm an 18 year old Superman lover, I'm known as "Superman The Man of Steel" through-out my school, my friends and family. Christopher Reeve played the best Superman ever. He's my idol, my role model. To this day I still look up to this outstanding person. I've been a Superman lover ever since I was born, I wear my different Superman shirts almost every day, to show Christopher Reeve aka Superman the celeberity I look up to that I care, and I always will. I have always watched superman, man it's a cool movie. Well, that's not what i've written for - I have written to say that Christopher Reeve is an amazing person in spite of all that has happened to him he still believes, he still has hope - WOW, what a person. Please g-d one day soon there will be a cure for his illness and so many people will praise all those people who lived to help others like Christopher Reeve.

Kal-El could be a combination of a Greek word meaning "beauty" (as in kaleidoscope) and the Hebrew word for God -- The "Beauty of God" or the "Beautiful God." Hi I'm Polarman and there are 64 days until Canada has a new territory called Nunavut and we will celebrate Nunavut day on April 1 (note this is not an April fools day joke) so I was wondering if Superman and some of his friends would like to come up to Iqaluit in the nwt located on the southern tip of Baffin island by Frobisher bay to help celabrate with Supershamu, Polarwoman and myself on and offstage with fun, entertament and games.

I am currently embroiled in a bulletin board discussion with a few friends on the topic of the moral superiority/strength/overall "betterness" (for lack of a better word) of the Man of Steel vs. the Dark Knight. Many of the sentiments expressed there about the "betterness" of Superman reflect much of what has been said here. Superman is the greatest, and whoever is responsible for this site is to be commended for his attention to the subject. The comments here are well-thought out and reasonably deal with the subject. This is by far the most extensive Superman site out there. I have a particular fondness towards the fan artwork and appreciate all the work you have put into the information you have gathered. On the side, it would be cool to see some Superman toys that are out there. I have a small collection (even a ring!) and would love to see what else is out there. Anyone who knows of a good internet site, please e-mail it to me. Superman action figures for some reason seem to be scarce... I have one from the JLA, and apparantly there is another one that was only released in the States (I'm in Canada) of the "Blue" Superman. One other thing - does anyone know what is happening with the Superman movie? Has it been axed for good? Thanks a lot for a GREAT web page! Nice webpage. I have been a Superman fan since the late 1950s. How about some definitive information on Krypton's solar system and its galactic location? In the past you have revealed that a moon of Krypton, Thoron, was inhabited and was Krypton's twin. Also there were three other moons, and another inhabited planet in Krypton's solar system which held an olympic contest with Krypton every year. In the new animated series, Supergirl is from a third planet in the system. Any more info on the system either Pre-Crisis Or Post?

Do you have a bibliographjy of sources on the history of Superman? Jim Steranko claims that Siegel & Shuster were influenced by Philip Wylie's 1930 novel GLADIATOR. Do you know of any sources on this? Also, do you know of any sources on the impact of the controversies of the late 40s & early 50s (especially the criticisms of Dr. F. Wertham) and how they influenced the character of Superman? Was Superman changed in the 50s because of the Comics Code or the success of the George Reeves TV series?
