Dear Sir: This is the best page of Superman that I have ever seen. I wish they didn't take him off the air. Do you know when will the new Superman movie be out? I can't see Nicholas Cage playing Superman. I wish they would consider somebody else. Keep up the good work.

Superman is, and always will be, the greatest superhero that ever lived. I have loved him since I was a child. When ABC aired "Lois and Clark" I became a real fanatic. I collect anything that has to do with the Superman theme. My dog is named Lois Lane. And my licence plate says Lois Lane. This is a great sight to find info on the "Man of steel". Good job.

I think that superman is one of the best comic heroes of all time! He should be in some hall of fame or something. He rocks!! He should have his own cartoon and not share one with that dumb batman. One last thing, the "man of steel" is the coolest of all the comic heroes of all time.

- Blake, Wed, 9 Dec 1998 17:26:18 GMT

Superman is completely awesome. I love him so much. I have for ever and I intend to marry Dean Cain!!!!

I really like this site. I loved looking through it since I knew almost nothing about Pre-Crisis Superman.

- Bushra Burney, Mon, 7 Dec 1998 2:23:35 GMT

I have loved Superman ever since I was a little kid. I have Superman movies, cartoons, comics, and even the old chapters from the theater. This is a great site that I hope to visit often.

- Dan Gleason, Sun, 6 Dec 1998 13:48:58 GMT

As a kid in the early '40's growing up in Boston, MA, I faithfully listened to the Adventures of Superman on the radio, sponsored by the breakfast cereal Kellogg's Pep.  I was convinced that if I ate enough Pep, I, too, might be able to "bend steel in my bare hands" and snap chains across my chest.  Great hero back then.  Wholesome entertainment without the tragic dialog many of today's comic books feature.  Thanks for the memories, Supe!

- Ron Crowley, Wed, 2 Dec 1998 23:44:58 GMT

Hello DC!
Whatever happened to RAO, the God of Kal-El's home planet, Krypton? Isn't there a chance for RAO to show up in person to assist Kal in any way possible?  Remember, after Krypton perished, RAO resided in the red-hued Heavens with Krypton's trillions of debris passing through his ethereal or phantom form....... he's alive and probably hatching new plans!!  Thank you for listening!!

I'm going to be shooting an Amercian Express commercial with Jerry Seinfeld to be shown during the Superbowl. While on the set, I would like to challenge Jerry to a Superman Trivia contest. I was a pretty good collector until I was about 15 (1969). I'm looking for a good source of Superman Trivia that I can just read over and over to bring me up to date. Do you know of anything like this? Pure data is what I'm looking for.

Please let me know,

This is a wonderful site giving the history of Superman, the greatest 20th-Century Hero. I remember Superman's old TV series... and started reading Superman comic books at almost the beginning of his Silver Age. The Golden Age Superman, the Intermediate Age Superman, the Silver Age Superman, the Bronze Age Superman and the Iron(?)Age Superman are all valid extensions of the hero Jerry Siegel thought up in the 1930s. (By the way, I was born in Cleveland too.) Superman will exist in one form or another as long as people need to wish for a special hero. Perhaps in the near future, Superman and Lois will actualy have children - or at least one child to carry on the Super-tradition. Thanks to the writers, artists, actors and fans everywhere who brought Superman to life and will carry him on into the 21st Century!!!!

- Richard Ranke, Tue, 24 Nov 1998 18:39:27 GMT

Some good news. I stumbled across a web-site devoted to the Weisinger and Schwartz era of the Silver age. Maybe you should post this article on your web-site to show our younger readers why Supes was at his zenith during the 50's to the early 80's. The lengthy article provides a beautiful synopsis of the themes and plots that characterize that era, especially on its heavy emphasis on sci-fi, fantasy, mystery and humor, the elements of which are sadly lacking in the present age. This site also serves to inform the younger readers of Supes why the 'old age' devotees are so enamored of the Silver and Bronze ages.

Please check out this site at

http://members.aol.com/mg4273/comics.htm

Read it and enjoy. I hope it gives you many happy memories. It proves that my youth was not wasted on 'silly' stories after all. The trend is for 'grim & gritty' stories now, so compare those halcyon days of Weisinger and Schwartz with the present and see the difference.

- Romarico Galvez, Tue, 24 Nov 1998 15:10:49 GMT

For eighteen years now I have grown to admire the man, myth, and legend whom we all know as Superman. I have followed his adventures since day one of my life. This site helps me to remember everything that I feel has made him an icon to all the world. From the bottom of my heart, I'd like to say thanks. Thanks for giving me a hero to believe in, and thanks for giving me powers beyond those of mortal men.

- Delon E.X.I.L.E. Sykes, Mon, 23 Nov 1998 1:46:21 GMT

Well I loved the whole thing! And Aunt Debbi showed me it all! Great job and don't stop trying to make the site cooler.

- Ray Galvan, Sat, 21 Nov 1998 17:23:46 GMT

I've loved Superman since I was a kid. I would actually like to know a web site that has the largest choice in Superman apparel. Thanks!

I am a big Superman fan. Collect all that I can (if I have the money). My best part of my collection and one that can't be sold is Superman's shield on my chest. Also have full figure Batman on my right thigh.

- joseph viola, Sat, 14 Nov 1998 06:08:12 GMT

I am a big Superman fan and i think that Christopher Reeve is the only true Superman, I do not like the idea of Nicholas Cage as Superman he is terrible. The worst era of Superman is the one with the long hair. Superman has, and always will be, the greatest Superhero of all time

- Mike Pomerantz, Mon, 9 Nov 1998 2:10:55 GMT

please mor info on Doomsday.

- Chris, Fri, 6 Nov 1998 17:14:36 GMT

Nice site. Any site dedicated to Superman is good in my eyes. I agree with some of the rest of you, how Superman was better back in the day. I don't particularly like the new versions of him. Although I am still faithful to him since he was, is, and always will be the best superhero and probably the most popular ever to be created. As soon as I found out who Superman was at an early age, I have loved him ever since. I am 14 now and I have dressed up as Superman about 4 halloweens out of about 6 or 7 and have spent hundreds of dollars on Superman merchandise and still watch all of his movies and cartoons.

- Andrew Furman, Thu, 5 Nov 1998 22:12:22 GMT

I think this site kicks butt!!!
Great Job!

Hello, it's me again the hardcore Pre-Crisis fan! I would like to give specific answers to the rebuttals aired by Glenn Doyle on this web-site about John Byrne's work on Supes. It seems that he needs a history lesson on the identity of Superman. Here goes :

1) John Byrne did 'minimal' changes on the legend.

Minimal, huh? Do you call the following changes minimal:

Kal-El's rejection of his Kryptonian roots,

the execution of 3 Phantom Zone criminals,

doing a porno flick with Big Barda,

downsizing his powers and his moral standards as well,

Clark Kent and Kal-El are blurred so that there is no distinction between the 2 (note that in the beautiful movie starring Chris Reeve, whom Byrne claims to base his character on, Clark is actually a bumbling, nerdy buffoon; though we know it's all an act, and the invulnerable Kal-El is behind those silly spectacles)

Clark has a normal happy childhood, albeit as a football jock, then as a Pulitzer prize winner (what happened to the meek, mild mannered reporter?) with his foster parents still alive. Has it ever occurred to you that the outstanding achievers, in myth and in real life, had flawed backgrounds or were orphans, rejects of society? Why then did Siegel & Shuster bump off Jonathan & Martha Kent when Supes was entering College? It's to drum the message across that even Superman can suffer the loss of his loved ones, and it's also to produce empathy with the readers on loss and the theme of alienation (look up Yosef Shumaker's article in this web-site) Besides, a second loss to him; (the first was due to Krypton's destruction) was meant to be a rite of passage from puberty to manhood, and nothing makes us grow up faster than the loss of our parents.

2) John Byrne was one of the few who knew Superman well:

I beg your pardon, what about Elliot Maggin, Cary Bates, E. Nelson Bridwell, Alan Moore, Marty Pasko etc.; are these guys strangers to Supes? No!

Byrne's revamps of the villains and the supporting cast did not bode well with me either. For example,

Lex Luthor was better off portrayed as a mad scientist, and not as a criminal overlord like the Kingpin. Now LL's so boring and dull, he needs a makeover. And a new hair-do.

Brainiac is now a disembodied spirit, possessing the mind and body of a small-time circus mentalist, Milton Fine. Is he as fearsome as he once was, a 5th level computer entity? Nope. Again, dull, dull, dull! His present fights with Supes are poorly done (I've got the first Byrne appearance of Brainiac, so I know what I'm talking about)

Bizarro was once a fun guy with the mangled English; like my Philippine president Joseph Estrada doing those wacky stunts with his convoluted logic. He am a tragic-comic figure in Silver & Bronze ages; now am boring pathetic clone (First Byrne appearance am in Man of Steel mini-series)

Lana Lang once was an interesting childhood sweetheart who was part of the humorous eternal triangle with Lois and Supes; alas, Byrne wrote her off as a very minor character early in the series.

Mxyzptlk used to disappear when Supes could trick him into saying his name backwards. This new and improved Byrne version has no such weakness, and Superman has to wrack his brains to get rid of this imp. The duel of wits between the 2 opponents lost its sting. There was even a classic Weisinger story where Supes crosses time and space to torment Mxy in his own home turf, the 5th dimension, and it was an amusing tale of the imp trying to get Supes back to Earth by making him say his name backwards! Now that was funny! Unfortunately, Byrne stripped Supes of his ability to travel through time and space, so no such story is possible now. I've got an idea, say E-N-R-Y-B, John. Nope, he didn't disappear.

What about the new villains during Byrne's tenure on the series? Can any of the readers remember Magpie, Silver Banshee, Hookshot, ad nauseam? Any show of hands? Yoo-hoo,anybody there?

And Supergirl (who is, was, will be and will always be Kara Zor-El for me) is now reprised by a sexless protoplasm with TK abilities, from an alternate time-line again! Is she a good replacement for Kara? Any show of hands? None again? Why not ditch the name Supergirl and call this Matrix Proty-Byrne instead?

3) John wanted to prevent Supes from becoming irrelevant and a farce.

Question: In what way was he becoming irrelevant and farcical? Too many powers? Too many Kryptonians? Too many multiple realities? To be fair, I read most of the Bronze age stories in my collection; and even the worst stories were comparable to Byrne's stories. What was not impressive were the poor inking and coloring and paper reproductions in the Late Bronze age, but hey, there was more content and heart in those stories than in Byrne's, despite his better inkers and colorists. His Superman had no 'heart'.

In fact, a lot of the Weisinger stories and some of the Schwartz stories had Supes in a ridiculous situation. It shows that since Superman is about wish fulfillment, it's fun to let your hair down once in a while and knock Supes off his pedestal. This is what I call serious fun. Superman, in danger of becoming farcical, irrelevant? Look at him now, he IS a farce and irrelevant! We can give good ole'John the credit for this.

In summary, it is fair to place the blame squarely on John's shoulders, but he should share it with Jeanette Kahn, Marv Wolfman, Frank Miller, Steve Gerber and Denny O'Neil. John did some good alright - to his pocket!

Lest you misconstrue me as a Byrne basher, let me be the first to declare that he does better work on Marvel than on DC. Witness his work on the Fantastic Four. I loved that series very much, with no objections save for Alicia's breakup with Ben Grimm and her matching up (pun intended) with the Human Torch. Another exceptional series he did was his collaboration with Chris Claremont on the X-Men (though I admit I hate mutants; they're a bunch of whiners). Look at Wonder Woman, New Gods and that appalling mini-series Genesis, by Byrne. Could you honestly tell me he did his job well on those titles? Like I said, John should stay in Marvel! Nuff said!

- Romarico Galvez, Sat, 31 Oct 1998 17:01:31 GMT

Heya...congratulations on a great site, in many, many respects. I have to take issue, however, with the harsh treatment of John Byrne and the influence of his "Man of Steel" miniseries on the subsequent Superman stories...Look, I'll be the first to concede that the Superman stories presently being told in the convoluted issue-a-week continuity are weak. Very, very weak, on occasion. It's obvious that Joey and the boys at DC have become just addicted to media attention; there was no call for the "Electric Superman" storyline, for example, to drag on and on and on like it did, nor was there any call for Clark and Lois to actually get married, for Chrissakes, and did the Man of Steel really need the long hair for as long as he did? Yes, there are major, major flaws in the current Superman books, and we can debate for weeks on how to fix them. Unfortunately, however, many seem to be tracing the current problems back to John Byrne and the "Man of Steel" project in 1986; to the contrary, I would submit to you that John Byrne was among the few at DC at that time and in the issues immediately following to really understand Superman. First of all, about this continuity business... John tinkered minimally, at worst, with the legend, folks. Kal-El is from Krypton, and whether he was "born" there or in Johnathan and Martha Kent's north forty is a technicality. He was put in a rocket ship and sent to Earth from an exploding planet Krypton (those who dwell on John's slight changes in this regard miss the point altogether). And everyone who's shouting about the absence of Argo City and Krypto the Superdog and the bottled city of Kandor in all of this: John's "Man of Steel" series never specifically ruled any of this out; just because he didn't embrace it all in seven issues doesn't mean future writers couldn't. John had a tough job, and he did it very, very well...by providing us with more plausible explanations for Superman's powers and cutting them back a little, he saved the character from becoming a parody, a farce, a cliché. Furthermore, take a look at John's Superman; he is decidedly *not* the whiny "Mama's boy" we've seen for a few years now. I would submit that Byrne's Superman draws most of it's influence from Christopher Reeve's movie Superman, and that includes his barritone-voiced committment to Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Frankly, the very best thing DC could do to revive Superman would be to fire Joey Cavalieri and Dan Jurgens and bring Byrne in as editor of the Superman books...perhaps, then, we'd get more great stories like "Action Annual #1," for instance. Anyway, I've said my piece; perhaps I just embrace John Byrne's vision (and his vision alone; again, allow me to stress that Dan Jurgens and Joey Cavalieri and Karl Kessel have strayed far, far from what John had in mind; for examples of what I mean- and some good comic books- go back and read some of the "Superman" stories he wrote and drew right after the "Man of Steel" miniseries) because it was the version of Superman with which I grew up, just like the generation before me grew up with the Bronze Age Superman and defend that version to the death. Just my two cents. We're all looking to the same end, and admiring the same guy.

- Glenn Doyle, Wed, 28 Oct 1998 02:55:12 GMT

my opinions on Superman will never change, even with all these changes to him, and although i think he was best in the 60's and 70's, he was and all ways will be the best no matter who or what super-hero fights him he will always be the best

I am duly impressed with this website. Truly everything you need to know about Superman. I didn't even know about some of the things discussed in this site. Very interesting indeed.

- Robert Loomis Jr., Sat, 17 Oct 1998 20:37:03 GMT

This is one of the greatest Superman sites that I have ever seen! This is the only site out of about a hundred sites that I could find info about the "Superman turns 50" article in the March14/1988 issue of Time Magazine. I have a ton of Superman Memrobilia, my favorite of which is my superman sweatshirt from 1942. Your site is the greatest! keep up the good work.
Sincerly, Brendan Fletcher

- Brendan Fletcher, Wed, 14 Oct 1998 1:36:27 GMT

I think your site is awesome. I am probably the biggest Superman fan ever. I have all the movies even the cartoons. I have all the cards, all the posters, i even have a letter written by Christopher Reeve. He is the one true superman.

Since I was a kid I have been a big Superman fan. Even now at the age of 19, my interest in The Man of Steel is still strong. I am not happy with the change in Superman that has been made. I don't like his new Look. I miss the big red S. In my heart and my eyes I will always remember Superman the way he always was.

Thank you.

- Matt Campbell, Wed, 30 Sep 1998 2:58:13 GMT

I love this website.  It reminds me of my childhood hero, the true Superman from the Silver & Bronze ages.  I hate the present version that DC publishes and wish that John Byrne, Marv Wolfman, Jeanette Kahn, Frank Miller and other Kryptonian saboteurs had not changed him.  If you look at the present series right now, it's a big mess.  And DC is vehemently denying that they are destroying Superman!  Obviously, they don't know who the real Superman is!  Eliminating the core elements of the mythos painstakingly built by the writers and its creators show that the present management cares about money.  I think that DC stands for dollars and cents, and the current Super-team is trying too hard to deny the character's rich and colorful history; while they seem to take great pleasure in tormenting this version of Superman.  Every story in the past 12 years since the re-boot shows that the present 'creators' do not love Superman and are trying to shock its readers with controversial and inane storylines, such as his death & resurrection, the hippie hair-do, the Gen-X attitude, the self-doubt and despair that pervades the series resulting in a very dull version of our hero indeed.  In fact, this impostor should be exiled to the Phantom Zone, along with the false Supergirl, Superboy, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Legion of Superheroes and their over-rated creators.

If I had the power to change Supes, I want him back, silliness and all, incongruencies and multiple realities in its full glory.  It isn't about powers, it's about Kal-El's moral fiber, his mental toughness, his keen intellect and resourcefulness, his ability to withstand temptation, his compassion for the weak, downtrodden and poor.  Not for me is the self-doubting, whining worry-wart of a Mama's boy. No,that's not Superman, that's Spider-Man or a mutant in disguise. Even the new animated series has its depressing moments.  Superman, in a space-suit, a diving suit, sometimes cruising our solar system in a refitted rocket ship?  Though Paul Dini and Bruce Timm gave Superman's rightful origin back, John Byrne's (and DC's) recent influence still exert an insidious effect on the series.  No bottle city of Kandor, no Krypto, no red, gold, white, blue kryptonite, no time-travel or planetary travel without oxygen masks.  Scott McCloud did an excellent 12 issues on the Superman Adventures, and should be tapped as story consultant on the cartoons.  I wonder what the real reasons for his departure were.  That series was never the same again.

Why is Superman my hero; imaginary though he may be?  He is a product of our deepest fantasies; to defend the weak and champion their rights; to be an invincible guardian angel (not a demi-god, as his detractors claim); to have powers and abilities far beyond mortal men; and yet to dwell among us, disguised as a meek, mild mannered reporter who conveys our own fears and weaknesses, yet is truly a powerful being who lives to serve mankind.  That is the origin of Superman as conceived by Siegel & Shuster, to show us what we could be if we reached the pinnacle of physical, mental and moral perfection.  Alas,DC did not perceive it that way, and wanted the previous incarnations of Superman rubbed out.  Ironically, most of their stories are knee-jerk reactions to counter the legend of Kal-El.  In their efforts to negate the Superman of the past, they have written 'new' and boring tales based on the past!  As it goes with the classic pop songs of the 60's to the 80's,the new wave techno-pop rehashes of the old songs are poor substitutes of the original.  Ain't nothin' like the real thing, baby.  Bring the original back!

And I want the old supporting cast back, too!

- Romarico Galvez, Sat, 26 Sep 1998 18:42:49 GMT

If Tim Burton does create "Superman Reborn" starring (rumoured) Nicholas Cage, they better use the same theme song as in superman "the movie" by (williams). I just can't hear it any other way. That theme is just so SUPERMAN to me !!!!! What do you think ???

- John Kurdyla, Fri, 25 Sep 1998 1:53:35 GMT

- John Richard Greaves III (John Richard Greaves III), Mon, 14 Sep 1998 15:16:05 GMT

Thanks for this site. I have been a superman fanatic for so long among x-men worshippers that I forgot there were others like me in existence. I started on superman comics with the big comics back in 73 (I was 2). Superman is my first memory. And he will probably be the last. My husband hates all my superman paraphernalia cluttering the house. But he is my hero.

Your site should have photos of other Superman stuff, toys, clothes, housewares, tattoos, etc.
Keep up the good work.

- april, Fri, 11 Sep 1998 0:54:15 GMT

Thanks, April, we're glad you like the site! As for the photos of "other Superman stuff," we agree with you -we just haven't been able to find any!

The following short poem is something I thought up while visiting this sight. It's a bit corny, but it sums up what I was feeling at the moment. Here goes:

To Superman:

It's 1998,
and you are sixty years old,
Happy Birthday Big Guy!
I've known you since my youth...
And hope to see you when I die.

- Hictor Gomez, Sun, 6 Sep 1998 04:42:41 GMT

I have been a huge fan of Superman since I can remember! I have all the movies and collect a lot of other cool Superman stuff. I'm currently in Saudi Arabia and found this site one night on duty and read it for 5 and a half hours straight. I love this page and return to it often to refresh my knowledge. I just want to thank the creators for this wonderful page.

Thanks, SuperMac

i have grown up with superman for 30 years and i am STILL convinced that he represents the character of the american people.

- dale charles, Thu, 23 Jul 1998 04:22:40 GMT

I've been a die-hard Superman fan since birth and this is by far the best website I've seen yet dedicated to Big Blue.

- Michael J. Kahn, Sun, 19 Jul 1998 19:54:35 GMT

Superman is as much American as apple-pie, baseball, and the stars and stripes. I have enjoyed and I still have a great time with all of the different incarnations of Superman. Ever since I was a child, I have loved the character, and now that I am 29 years old, Superman is still as enthralling today as it was years ago. Whether it's Christopher Reeve or George Reeves, Superman is terrific!!!!!

- Jeffrey Dewey, Sat, 18 Jul 1998 18:38:31 GMT

I like Superman's style, heck, I often dream of flying. My concern here is N. Cage WILL NOT make a good Superman, what is Burton thinking ...Keaton as Batman? Hello!? I think the actor Brad Johnson will make an exellant Man of Steel! Sorry, had to get this off my chest...

- NormG, Tue, 14 Jul 1998 20:08:05 GMT

Since I was a boy, I have been a devoted fan of what Superman does and stands for...Truth, Justice, and the American way.

- michael d hamilton, Sat, 11 Jul 1998 16:00:39 GMT

I think this web site shows what people really think about comics

- John Kroll, Sat, 4 Jul 1998 14:42:54 GMT

I really believe you have a terrific site here. There's only one thing that aggravates me here though. You do not do your "Steel Age" any justice. The writers are all trying to do something new with Superman and it should be acclaimed not criticized. Sure, they killed him, brought him back, gave him a new costume, etc. All of this has been done in the past. As much as I agree that Superman should not be carrying a gun, you do not give the Super writers any credit for what they are currently doing. I think they have all realized there mistakes and are trying to fix them. So this "Iron Age" as you haved dubbed it is not nearly as bad as you say. Also you are hypocritical to yourself. In one part you criticize the new Superman, then next you acclaim his past with a picture from one of the more recent issues. That doesn't make any sense to me. But like I said. Your site really is great, but I think it could be improved if you spent more time making the recent Superman look good than chastise him.

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird, a plane no it's SUPERMAN THROUGH THE AGES!

- CALVINGEN, Sat, 27 Jun 1998 20:12:50 GMT

Faster than a speeding bullet!
More powerful than a locomotive!
Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound!
Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!
It's Superman!
Superman! Strange visitor from another planet who came to earth with powers and ablities far beyond those of mortal men.
Superman! Who can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in his bare hands.
And who, diguised as Clark Kent, mild mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper fights a never ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way!

I'm 42 years old and I have had that little ditty floating around in my head for at least the last 37. Long live the Man of Steel!

- Tim Juhl, Tue, 23 Jun 1998 16:48:25 GMT

I am really glad that you have assembled the materials for this website. Congratulations! It is a job well done. I am a regular contributor for FAMZING, the on-line DC Comics fanzine. In July, we will be paying homage to Superman's 60th anniversary. Be sure to visit!

Superman is awesome - he keeps us going. For all who wear the Superman shield, best of Luck.  I don't like the new Electric Superman, they say it's for the new generation but I'm 16 and I don't like it.

Thank you for keeping the man of steel alive, I think this is a great site
please keep up with the good job

- Cesar Castillo, Wed, 10 Jun 1998 20:30:01 GMT

This is a terrific site! Glad to see the heart and soul of the legend is being preserved. I grew up reading Superman's adventures in the comics and watching him on TV, and it seems like some of the ideals that he stands for helped influence me as I grew up. Hopefully, he will continue to stand for "truth, justic and the American way" far into the future! Some things you just never outgrow (or ever should)!

- Terry Hanks, Tue, 9 Jun 1998 05:58:53 GMT

Superman is the greatest hero, the modern incarnation of the mythological gods, thru him we can fulfill our deepest dreams and fantasies. Happy 60th aniversary old friend, and congratulations to the creator of this website, one single word: superb.

Best,
Carlos M. Santillan.

- Carlos M. Santillan, Sat, 6 Jun 1998 22:06:10 GMT

He is the best hero in the world and I really like how you guys make him bigger than life

- DAVID, Wed, 3 Jun 1998 23:43:54 GMT

To the creator of this website, you're a genius, you truly understand the legend.

I have read The Death and Life of Superman novelization by Roger Stern. That's it. No comics, no other novels, etc etc. My knowledge of Superman is limited to the background pieces from the novel and the movies(although historiclly it would be safe to disregard the movies!). True, the legend comes through clearer in older comics and mythos, but what we are forgetting is that the legend can not die. Just 'cause the writers changed dosen't mean that Supes is a different person. The legend changes for people who are losing faith, people who don't like the stories being told. You lot act as if a criminal act is being committed. If you want you see criminal, just look at the direction the Batman movie franchise has taken.

Maybe Stern changed the novel to suit the story he wanted told, or something like that. But my point is this, SUPERMAN STILL THE SAME. He's still foolishly honourable(sorry!), he's still treats the earth as if it was and is his home. He'd die to save the human race. The only thing that's changed is that this is the nineties, and little 12 year-olds can't compare Superman with Wolverine, because Supes has it "easy" and he's "whimpy". (which is why DC revamped![Money a MAJOR factor!])

DC toned done his powers? Good, the guy was getting invincible! They changed his origin? Good, the current origin is definitely better! They changed him? GOOD, they made him human!!!! They changed the Legend? Nope...

Here's an example from Stern's book: Supes is flying away to get Doomsday and kick his butt for the destruction he's caused, but his hearing tells him that someone is calling him! (a kid who's family is about to be killed in a gas explosion) He's just about to get Doomsday when he decides to turn around, fly back, save the kid's family and then resume his butt kicking...

A guy who doesn't run from his problem's to the fortress of Solitude, a guy who doesn't have a gadget for every villian he's got to defeat. A guy who goes to his parents to talk when he's in DEEP S**T.

Agreed DC is or was making changes which are at times frightening, but they are changes for a new generation.

A generation where unfortunately, Courage, Honor, Duty, Respect and other values are disregarded in favour of retractable claws, big guns and smartass one-liners.

I ask you people, be content...

it could be a LOT worse.

The views and opinions presented in these guest book entries do not necessarily reflect those of the staff and management of Superman Through the Ages!

This is by far the best Superman page I've ever seen. It depicts The Man of Steel as he should be, a legend.

- Matt Hassler, Fri, 22 May 1998 08:15:06 GMT

I am my town's superman fanatic many actually call me the man of steel. I love your page. Do you get special attention for being a superman buff?

- Matt, Sun, 17 May 1998 19:58:09 GMT

This site is completely amazing.  It is so great to see a website that is devoted to the Superman that we all know and love, the POWERFUL Superman, the Alan Moore and Eliot S! Maggin Superman, THAT'S the one I know.  Thank you, my friends for this site.  It is excellent page, one of the best I've seen, comic or otherwise. I, for one, truly appreciate your work at keeping the character alive.

- steven byrd, Sat, 16 May 1998 0:08:32 GMT

I am a really big Superman fan and I am glad to hear that he is back in his old costume and original powers he had before. Every issue that I read is really good and done perfectly, keep up the good work.

Sean,
I thought I would put my name on search and see what would happen.  I had no idea!  I publish a monthly Christian newspaper called the Texas Voice.  www.texasvoice.com.  I live in San Antonio, Texas.  My father (George Lowther) died in 1984.  Our family is from Seattle, but I believe originated in West Virginia in the U.S.  I'd like to hear from you!!  My fax is 1-830-438-4012.

The Death and Life of Superman RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Jeremy Askeland, Fri, 1 May 1998 18:09:51 GMT

There needs to be information on Supermans latests powers. But other than that this is a good website.

- Iceman, Thu, 30 Apr 1998 22:16:07 GMT

It is good to see this website again. I am glad you are back. Superman is definitely a hero's hero. Not because of his abilities or costume, but his morals. I recently written an article on Superman on Steven Younis' Superman page that people has enjoyed. I hope you like it because it is about Superman.

I am glad he is back in his old costume and powers. So happy birthday Superman, may you soar for at another 60 years going strong regardless of the odds or what villains you face.

- Gregory McNeill, Thu, 30 Apr 1998 20:34:57 GMT

I have been a big Superman fan for as far back as I can remember, and continue to be. I cut my teeth on the Silver Age comics that were passed down to me, and still enjoy the fact that the Superman of that era enjoyed "unlimited" super-powers. It is my feeling that DC hasn't got it right since they quit publishing those so called "silly" stories and "normalized" him. My request is to bring back the older, god-like, highly purehearted Superman that said "Up, up, and away!" whenever he flew off and everyone who saw him exclaimed "Look up in the sky...it's a bird...it's a plane...it's SUPERMAN!"

- Scott Wiggins, Tue, 21 Apr 1998 22:08:01 GMT

We agree, Scott, and suggest that everyone who has any opinions on this matter email DC comics!

Even worse than the Steel Age Superman is Nick Cage's playing the Man of Steel in the upcoming Death of Superman movie. Where have you gone, Kal-El? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

Thanks for keeping the vision true on your website. Superman lives!

- Susan E. Brooks, Mon, 20 Apr 1998 22:26:32 GMT

You may be pleased to learn that, according to the latest news, the new Superman movie has been cancelled.

I think Superman is the coolest I'm glad he has his old suit back and you should bring his dog back or a tribute to the dog

- mike christianson, Fri, 17 Apr 1998 17:10:32 GMT

If any Superman Fans (or Comic Fans) would like a free directory entry for your web page visit http://www.comics1.com to sign up. Superman has always been my favorite and I'm glad they returned him to his classic caped self.

- Aaron Deutsch, Tue, 14 Apr 1998 21:35:17 GMT

I have just become a Superman fanatic. But from this web site Superman is the coolest super hero ever. It started out as a nick name for friend then I started to really get into it and now all my friends call me Supergirl. I have all the movies taped I did not put down my web sight because I don't have one. I just got this computer.
SUPERMAN RULES!

- LESLEY E ESTES, Tue, 14 Apr 1998 17:52:53 GMT

Very cool

- Ed Lucey, Sun, 12 Apr 1998 22:02:39 GMT

i have been collecting big blues comics and toys since i was a child. i remember putting a table cloth around my neck and pretending to fly. I just want to thank everyone who has worked on the superman books and especially the creators!!! here's to another 60 years!...

- wil hatchel, Sat, 11 Apr 1998 20:33:08 GMT

I find it ironic that I found this website on April 6 (George Reeves' birthday). I followed Superman since I was a child, from '73 to the present. Everything from the Crisis of infinite Earths (Supergirl's death and Superman of Earth two and Superboy of Earth prime's banishment to Limbo) to Superboy's death to the battle of Doomsday from the long hair to the wedding from Blue & Red to the original look. Superman and Superboy were great friends to a boy who was grounded (An occurence that happen often) or for someone that wanted to get away from the problems of adolesence.

Thanks

- jIm EaGaN, Mon, 6 Apr 1998 22:50:45 GMT

Has anyone ever brought up on this page the "source material" for Alan Moore's WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW?, namely the novel SUPER FOLKS by Robert Mayer?

If you doubt, look at the climactic scene in the comic as Superman confronts Mxyptlk and compare it to this excerpt from the book, as Indigo confronts his impish nemesis.

"Why Pxysyzygy? You used to be happy with pranks? With mischief. The Cosmic trickster, that's your role. Why all this? Murder, intrigue..."

......

"Cosmic Trickster, s**t," the smile said "I'm tired of playing the clown. Call it Fool's Lib. From now on there will be death, destruction, disease. ...I am God and I will be worshiped as Him. I AM worshiped as Him" "Not on Earth you're not." "Give them time."

Super Folks was published by Dial Press in 1977.

Comments?

You're doing a wonderful job. To read the pages of your web site is also as dazzling as the way you read the real comics of Superman. Keep up a job well done.

Superman Rules! Having been a die-hard follower for 35 years, I can really appreciate your site. If you can help me locate other Super-fans in the Hampton Roads Va area, I would very much appreciate it! Long live Superman!

- Dave Cisco, Sat, 28 Mar 1998 23:06:51 GMT

I just found out about this web page through participating in the AOL Online Chat of 26MAR98 with Elliot S. Maggin. This Website is Great!!! Thanks for all the detailed work you've done in honoring Superman and his creators. See you all at the 60th anniversary Celebration in San Diego at ComicCon.

- Ted Rickes, Fri, 27 Mar 1998 03:01:17 GMT

You have a great website, and a great tribute to Superman! Do you think D.C. Comics is doing enough to really celebrate Superman's 60th Birthday? It seemed that there was more press back in '88. Also, isn't there going to be a commemorative Superman stamp issued some time this year?

- Brad Wooldridge, Thu, 26 Mar 1998 20:03:11 GMT

This was a kool site n' stuff. Superman Rulz

- General Zod, Thu, 26 Mar 1998 13:45:48 GMT

Thank you, most sincerely for one of the most touching web sites I have ever viewed. Superman to me not only embodies the endless crusade for all that he stands for but for memories and images of my childhood.

- James Rivera, Wed, 25 Mar 1998 12:27:06 GMT

I'm writing a report on the big "S", and this site was a great help! Keep up the good work! As far as history of the character, your site even overshadows the Superman Homepage, in my humble opinion. I'm a huge fan of what you call the "Bronze Age" Superman, so it was great to read your interview with Maggin. He was great. My only criticism is that there was NOTHING on Bizarro, my personal fave. Aside from that (which is easily corrected) I thought the page was great! One final comment: The "Steel Age" Superman didn't start out so bad, Byrne & Wolfman (hell, even Perez)'s runs on the books weren't so bad, in my book.

- Mike Quilligan, Wed, 18 Mar 1998 01:03:27

Thanks, Mike! We hope to get to Bizarro as well! There are probably as many different takes on the Steel Age as there are Superman fans - we're just trying to provide some perspective. And we certainly aren't trying to compete with the Superman Homepage - Steven Younis does an absolutely amazing job and his site inspired us to create this one! We certainly agree with your assessment of Elliot S! Maggin - although we'd like to point out that a more accurate description might be that he is great!

i was doing a project on joe shuster because he is a canadian artist and i got 75% of my info from here thanx.

- K@L, Sat, 14 Mar 1998 21:35:58 GMT

Supes is the best! I am a fan since 1956! I have everything from Crisis on Infinite Earths to the present! Can't wait till the Supes Red & Supes Blue come together to make the one and only SUPERMAN! Great web site, keep up the great work!

- Ron-El, Fri, 13 Mar 1998 19:05:35 GMT

Superman is the best. I especially like the vintage Superman. Superman The Movie is one of the best movies of all time. There will never be another George Reeves or Christopher Reeve to fill the red boots. What else can I say, Superman is the best!!!

- R. Lorente, Sun, 8 Mar 1998 20:02:47 GMT

Superman has been my all time favorite hero since I was 6 years old, that was in 1952. I watched the old Superman t.v. shows over and over. I was thrilled with the comic books and the guys that could draw like that. I later became an artist which I still am. I always wanted to be able to draw a comic book and was happily able to do a few issues of my own comic creation in the early 90's, Zog the Frog. He had the head of a frog, but if you looked close you would see the similarity of his and Superman's body. Thanks to those who made Superman possible and all those years of enjoying him. .......Stan

- Stanley White, Fri, 6 Mar 1998 2:46:51 GMT

Groovy Baby, Yeah! Wait - that's Austin Powers? Anyways, for the Lip Syns, we are going to be the Super Chicks and we're using the Superman emblem on our shirts. Thanks!

- Traci, Fri, 6 Mar 1998 0:29:08 GMT

Wicked website - Superman is the ultimate and I am going to get a picture of him tattooed on my stomach just because of his coolness! Yeah I love superman!

- Julie, Thu, 5 Mar 1998 17:24:07 GMT

I think Superman is one of the best Role Models I've ever had in my life. It's nice to know that there is always someone to fall back on when I get bored or just feel like passing time. To end this, I would like to say that I've have been loyal and always will be to the house of El.

- Cyrena McVey, Tue, 3 Mar 1998 22:41:21 GMT

I loved the page.... I am a Superman fan. My friend Jason loves Superman too. So with all my wishes I hope you do the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeeeaaahhh!

- K.E., Sun, 22 Feb 1998 08:02:21 GMT

Thank You. Thank you for showing people what Superman is all about. Thank you for tributing the first and greatest super-hero. These days Superman is shown as a complaining man. He thinks only of the bad things happening around him. Rather than focus on the defining qualities of Superman: truth, honor, justice, the best qualities of man, the DC brass changed the character to increase sales. Let's face it. People haven't been buying Superman books lately only to read a new story. Most people just want to know when Superman will return. I'm glad Superman is coming back. I hope that people the likes of Mark Waid, or Kurt Busiek will grab hold of the Superman reigns. These men have proven they can write interesting stories about the true Superman. Maybe someday, Superman will return to the heights that he holds in my mind, but that probably won't happen in the near future. Until that day I'll return here to see what Superman is really about.

- Don Kidd, Sun, 22 Feb 1998 07:09:43 GMT

COOL

- MATTHEW, Fri, 20 Feb 1998 17:17:31 GMT

Terrific site, can't say enough about it! Unfortunately I am very busy with school and work and don't have the time to surf around for info about any 60th anniversary events. If anyone has this info, could you please send it along? Thanks! One more thing- Thank Rao Clark is going back to his old self!!! He's almost died or been 'dissipated' a number of times since this foolishness started!! This Energyman (that's what he is now) thing is a lousy merchandising gimmick- no wonder DC loses a lot of good talent to Marvel and the other companies! Can you imagine how spectacular Superman would be if drawn by the likes of the Spawn team??? I'd subscribe to that until I turned 80! Anyway, great page- I'll be back!!!
JH

- Jim Hunt, Mon, 16 Feb 1998 22:29:48 GMT

Very nice page. Superman fan since I was a little kid. I'd like to find out about the new action figures coming out if you have any information on when the release date is and how I can get them. I am still looking for playsets for the animated series. Please send any information that you can.

- Mike Cox, Sun, 15 Feb 1998 03:15:55 GMT

Great Scott! What a cool web page. I'm enjoying your page as I listen to a new release of Superman on Radio from the Smithsonian. These episodes feature Superman's team up with Batman years before they ever teamed in the comics. I highly recommend them. In any event your page is a fine bit of work. The best Superman page I've ever seen and among the best comics pages period. I will return often. Hey, have you ever been to the Superman museum in Metropolis IL? It is really super. You can see the actual super-costumes of George Reeves (one black and white, two color) Chris Reeve, Dean Cain and more.

- Mark anderson, Sun, 8 Feb 1998 4:56:58 GMT

I'm doing research on Superman and found your site very informative. One question? Do you have a picture of Clark Kent with his shirt ripped open revealing the Superman S on his chest?

- Doug Molidor, Fri, 6 Feb 1998 2:41:01 GMT

Here's one!

Nice work keep it up I've been interested in Superman facts since the late 1940's.

- Krypton 258, Wed, 4 Feb 1998 0:51:29 GMT

Superman is the best comics hero ever created! Christopher Reeve is the best Superman we've ever seen! After Chris Reeve, there is only one man to wear the Man of Steel's cape: His name is Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan.

- Agnaldo Pereira, Mon, 2 Feb 1998 22:01:29 GMT

What a wonderful website! This site will definitely be bookmarked. As a fan of the Superman character, I appreciate the effort and results of this website. Keep up the excellent work!

This is the best comicbook i have ever seen in the world

- COLLECTER, Wed, 28 Jan 1998 19:43:06 GMT

Hi there!
This site is the most amazing resource to Superman there is. It should be called: THE SUPERMAN ENCYCLOPEDIA
because it is more than a site,
its more than a resource,
it's...it's... a work of art.

Keep up the good work. Question: i have been looking for the Bob Riley animated gallery and i can't find it anymore. If anybody knows the address or knows where there is a link to it i would REALLY appreciate it if you could tell me. Thanks.

- Hans Christian Vang, Tue, 27 Jan 1998 15:17:41 GMT

Super page!

- Merv, Sun, 25 Jan 1998 19:18:32 GMT

I am an older fan of Superman's comics. Since 1976 I started to read all the comics about Superman and his superfamily. I live in Mexico but I studied a few english classes to understand the U.S. comics. Here in Mexico I bought a lot of comics and Superman always was my No. 1 superhero. Since the earthquake in Mexico City in 1985 the Editorial Novaro, (the group with the rights to the Superman comics in spanish) broke. I felt very bad without Superman comics for about 14 months. But another group started again and now we are soon to have in spanish the JLA title. Your Superman homepage is the best page in english that I found in all the Web and I like that all the team go on without problem in the "Never-ending battle" to continue with more, more and more information about the mightest myth of the century: SUPERMAN !

(Please, forgive me if I have some mistakes with this comments).
Your mexican superfriend: Federico

Excellent site guys! I praise you for your love and devotion to the character that comes through on every page. There's no better Superman site on the web.

Two critiques:

1. I like Byrne's Superman. He got me hooked on this character in the first place.

2. DC HAS lost sight of what Superman is all about. The Superman books desperately need to do away with the "triangle" numbering. None of the books stands out any more than the rest and too many uninteresting subplots takes away from why we read Superman in the first place: for Superman. If you agree, then let them know!

- Ron De Marco, www-personal.umich.edu/~ronnyd/ Sat, 17 Jan 1998 20:16:42 GMT

Superman is the best thing out there and the web page was out of this world i loved it.

- Anthony, Thu, 15 Jan 1998 23:02:12 GMT

Brilliant work. I have been searching for a page like this for a long time. The history of America's favorite hero is interesting in its effects on the future of comic books, and the way in which this fictional character has touched us all in the past sixty years. Bravo

- Bryan Smith, Thu, 15 Jan 1998 01:24:15 GMT

"Superman Thru the Ages" is one of the best Superman sites on this web, in my opinion. It has everything you need to know about Superman and how he has changed through the years. I hope you continue to do well with this site and I hope that this site remains a part of the web for as long as possible.

The cosmic irony of Superman is that he is the perfect being, smart, kind, and fights for the rights of others, and he's more human than humans.

The fortress is the best web location I have seen while surfing. I have been collecting superman comics all my life (40 years young) and will probably never get them all, early ones are so expensive but I sure found your site informative and interesting. You have done a great job and if the site I am starting is even a 10th as good I'll be happy. (Geocities.com/area51/rampart/4357)
